Flying Solo in Fussen

Hank and I parted ways in the Cologne train station. Hank had to catch a flight in Amsterdam to head back to the U.S. I had a tough decision to make- Where to explore next?

I decided to check out Bavaria, the state in southeast Germany. More specifically I set my sights on Füssen, a small village at the base of the Neuschwanstein Castle.

The train ride to the city of Füssen was so beautiful! It looked like all the scenes of Sound of Music were shot right off the train tracks.

I got to Füssen after a long day of train travel I decided to explore. The city was scenic with a river running through town and a massive forest surrounding the city.

I started to get used to not have a travel buddy, hiking alone, and going to dinner by myself. It is a foreign experience to eat by myself but I am starting to adjust and get used to it.

I went to bed early so I could get to the Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein Castle before it got too busy. I got on the 7:28AM city bus towards the castles and when I arrived I had to wait another 30 minutes for the ticket station to open, however, there was only a few other people waiting. I got my ticket and first had a tour for the Hohenschwangau Castle at 9. The entire mountain scene was breathtaking and the castle had many features to expose the scenery.

The Hohenschwangau Castle was built by King Maximilian II of Bavaria in just four years on top of a medieval castle. This castle was where King Ludwig II of Bavaria lived when he was a child. It was less packed with tourists and had a great view of Füssen out of many of the windows.

The Neuschwanstein Castle is the famous castle that inspired Disney’s Castle. I had a tour at 11 and the density of tourists had increased a ton. I got to my tour time and really enjoyed learning more about Bavarian culture and the famous castle.

The second night in my hostel it started to storm quite heavily and the power went out! The emergency light would not go off and kept many of us up for about an hour before the power turned on.

After a troubling night of sleep with rain, power outages, and extreme snoring me and a couple of hostel friends rented bikes. We rode our bikes to a huge lake called Forggensee.

After the long bike ride I explored the Füssen Castle which had a great view of the town. Füssen was a great experience with some great hostel friends and a great host. The next adventure is in store for Budapest, Hungary as I ride on my first overnight train from Munich to Budapest.
